MG Car Repair: gear reduction starter, brown wires, battery cable

Question
I have installed a new gear reduction starter in a 75 mgb. It starts and as soon as I let the key back to on it stops.
The original starter had the battery cable and 2 brown wires connected to the battery post on the solenoid and brown/white wire and a green/white on the side off the solenoid.  On the new starter the was only one connection on the side for the brown/white...where does the green/white
wire go?  Hope you can help...thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Jim,
Your car is wired as a 76 not a 75 and the extra wire is a bypass of a resistor that powers the 6v coil for starting. You have a wiring problem because if the extra wire were not in use (as it would not be on a solenoid that was different)then the car would run ok but not start very well. You need to take a wiring diagram (of a 76) and trace each circuit of the ignition system to find where it is not wired correctly. If you don't have a diagram let me know and I will put one on my web site for you to copy.
