MG Car Repair: vacum hose- power brake booster, power brake booster, coolant hose

Question
QUESTION: I took my 1976 MGB apart about 10 years ago. I am now trying to remember how to put it back together. I cannot remember the routing for the power brake booster vacum hose. I should tell you that I am NOT planing to reinstall the pollution stuff. Also, I use Victoria British for parts, they do not have this hose, it it available?

thanks
Joe Wray

ANSWER: Hi Joe,
The vacuum hose to the booster can be any stiff hose like coolant hose and you should be able to get it at any auto parts store. Be sure you use the non-return valve (one way valve fitted to the booster)

QUESTION: There is only one port on the intake manifold so I guess that question is moot, however, the intake port is considerably smaller than the hose inlet on the vacum booster. Does the one way valve have two different hose sizes?

Answer
The one-way valve is usually screwed into the back of the booster and has about a half inch hose on it. If your new manifold does not have a large hose connection for a booster you may need to drill and tap a hole for a large fitting or find a local shop that can do it for you if you don't have the tools. A booster can not operate by a small vacuum hose connection, It must be about the same size as the booster connection. It is not a very big job for a shop to do. It would be best to give them the manifold by itself and the size of the one way valve so they can match it.
