QUESTION: thank you i checked all the wires from ignition to see if thats why it wouldnt spark but they all looked fine, does the fact that im not getting a spark have to go with me having a 1974 spitfire distributor(which has breaker points) and trying to put it in a 75 mgmidget which originally has electronic distributor? does it matter?

Answer
Not at all if you wire it correctly. All you need on a pointed system (Kettering System) is a power supply to the coil and a wire from the (-) side of the coil to the points. The Lucas points require a condenser in the dist. and require that the points gap be correct (.015") That's all.
If you have that and it is not firing the coil you need to test why.
The contact points are a ground for the coil. When the points close, the coil is charged by your power supply. When the points open, they break the connection and the loaded coil discharges out the top of the coil to the dist cap to the rotor to each spark plug as they line up with the rotor.
First test for power to the (+) side of the coil.
Second test to see that the points do ground the coil (-) side to ground.
Third confirm that when the points open, that grounding of the coil is broken.
With those three tests you have to find what's wrong.
