MG Car Repair: MGBGT Kickdown cable replacement, cable replacement, transmission tunnel

Question
Hi Howard

I have a '71 MGBGT Auto (quite rare in the UK) which has a frayed kickdown cable.  I have the new cable and the car has been "modified" by a previous owner, who has cut a hole in the transmission tunnel to screw / unscrew the cable at the gearbox end.
(I have been told this was a common modification on auto Midgets and Sprites, too.)
Trouble is...as the gearbox end of the cable has a nipple on it, it must fix to something (an actuating lever ?) and I'm afraid to remove the old cable without knowing how to fit the new one.
Your help would be MUCH appreciated !

Cheers

André

Answer
Hi Andre,
The "B" with an automatic was rare here in the US too. I worked in several MG dealerships back then and I only seen one and didn't work on it. My manual shows the cable going into the top of the lip of the trans so that means you must pull the pan to be able to install the cable. I doubt you could get the cable changed if the trans was out of the car unless you pull the pan.
