MG Car Repair: spark, external amplifier, voltage amplifier

Question
QUESTION: 79 mg midget 1500 eng i got no fire, coil is new and its a elec dist  what do i need to check

ANSWER: The electronic ignition either works or it doesn't. When it fails even the man who designed it can't fix it. So all you can do is, be sure the coil is good, test power and grounds and confirm the air gap. Then if it does not work put it in the trash and buy another one.
Be sure the charging system is not over charging or you have bad plug wires as a open plug wire can cause a spark to jump down the coil tower and destroy a new igniter.

QUESTION: the dist is connected to a voltage amplifier is that the same as a volt reg.an could that cause the lack of spark

Answer
If you have some kind of aftermarket ignition system that has an external amplifier then you need to test the pick-up in the distributor. If it is a coil type with a reluctor you can usually test it by checking the two wires with a ohm meter. Even though you may not have the specs of what ohm reading it is suppose to be, usually a coil that has a connection between the two wires is usually ok but if it is a LED type you will need the manufactures specs to test it. You would need the manufactures test sequence for an external amplifier to test it but usually it either works or it doesn't work and their is NO repair NOT EVEN BY THE MANUFACTURE who made it. That is why many car owners go back to pointed ignition systems on old British cars.
A regulator is associated with an alternator or generator and nothing to do with an ignition system.
