MG Car Repair: 68 MGB w/ Weber, low oil pressure, compression check

Question
Howard,
Bought a "B" on Ebay and lo and behold low oil pressure.
Car is solid and is my 7th English car so I have tinkered in the past.  Should have kept the "A" that I had, but neded the cash for medical expenses.

Anyway, After getting car and seeing hte low oil pressure, ran compression check and they are all 138- 150 psig.  Next changed oil and the smell of gas was unmistakable.  Changed oil and also replaced the SU's with a Weber downdraft.  Even though I am pretty sure that I need to replace bearings and oil pump while I am at it, I have put  a Weber on the last two "B's" and my old "A" and really love the troublefree operation.

Now, cannot get car started.  Fuel pump is pumping gas, I adjusted float in Weber, and have adjusted air/ fuel screw all the way in and then out one complete revolution.  Have advanced the timing a bit and am getting spark.

I also replaced gas, thinking maybe that this was the issue.

What would you recommend I look at next.

Thanks,
Brian

Answer
HI Brian,
If you smelled gas in the oil and noted the oil was thin, the oil and filter change should have brought the pressure back up.
As far as not starting, all engines only require three items to run, compression, fire and fuel.
Since the only thing you changed was the carburetor/s, you need to look closer at that since the compression is ok. and you say you have spark. (however you should NEVER change timing from specs to try to correct anything)
