MG Car Repair: no spark, ohm meter, condensor

Question
QUESTION: was running perfectly, but had no brake lights...turned key on and found problem with brakes and fixed it.... i forgot to turn the key(ignition)off and left it overnight....went to start in the morning and battery was dead...charge up and now no spark at plugs...  will leaving the ignition on burn the condensor ? or coil....

ALSO:with key on and points closed , i slight serperate the points and get some spark....i cleaned and no change...

thank you for your time =)

ANSWER: Hi Jim,
Yes, you could have damaged the coil if the points were closed when you left the key on. It would have overheated the coil. If you have a ohm meter you can check it. But you need to know if it is a 12v or 6v coil. Tell me what year and model MG this is an I can probably tell you what the specs are.

QUESTION: 1974 mgb convertable (or roadster).  the points were probly closed ....its hard enough at the best of times to end up on the top lobe of the cam when adjusting points..lol ,i have lots of chevy 12v coils kicking around...is a coil a coil?

Answer
Hi Jim,
The 74 MGB should not have a resistor so any 12v coil should work ok. There may be some 12v coils that have a different ratio of windings but most will work on a car with points and condenser. I have a box of coils and have no idea where or what  kind of car they came off of and have used them on different cars ok.
You could check across the two posts with an ohm meter to see that the coil is about 3.1 to 3.5 ohm on the primary. That is what MG says they use.
