MG Car Repair: Seized Engine From Sitting!! Options?, wd 40, plug holes

Question
Howard - I have a 68 MGB that I fear has a locked up seized engine from sitting, we can't get it to budge. It was running fine 3 years ago when I stored it in the (dry) barn, now stuck. Is there ANYTHING that can be done besides taking it apart and putting back together??? Anything you can possibly do, such as pouring Rislone down into pistons thru spark plug holes, or am I done for and it must be disassembled?  Thanks!!

Answer
Hi Ben,
Usually that is rust on the cylinder walls. If it is minor you may be able to just put a table spoon of WD-40 or some other penetrating oil in the plug hole and let it set for a day or two then with the plugs still out put the car in 4th gear and have some friends help rock the car forward and back to try to break it loose.  Using 4th gear applies the most torque to the engine.
Attempts to break it loose with the starter motor can damage the starter or ring gear. BE SURE NOT TO PUT ANY MORE THAN A TABLESPOON IN THE CYLINDER.
If you get it to break loose you need to then spin the engine with the starter motor with the plugs out and add a little more WD-40 or such and continue to spin the engine. Then change the oil and filter and spin the starter more adding a teaspoon of engine oil to the plug hole but leave the plugs out and spin the starter until you see oil pressure on the gauge. NEVER start the engine until you have seen oil pressure by spinning with the plugs out. Oil pressure is between the oil pump and the bearings.
If you get it to break loose but it makes metallic noises when it turns over you need to remove the valve cover and oil each valve stem and any valve that is sticking you must bump it down with a plastic mallet or a wood hammer handle bumping the end of the rocker arm over the valve. Rust on a valve stem can cause the noise and by oiling and bumping down with a plastic mallet may break it loose by oiling and bumping down. Soon the spring will keep the valve up as you alternate oiling and bumping.
