MG Car Repair: battery hooked up wrong, battery cables, mg midget

Question
I recently purchased a 1979 MG Midget. The wiring was bad (someone used
household electrical cords in some instances). Both battery cables are red
too. Thus I wasn't paying attention and hooked it up wrong. Thus the
alternator got fried at least that's what I'm assuming when all the smoke
came pouring out. It's a given the alternator is shot. Is there anything else I
should keep an eye out for?
Also, I disconnected the alternator and the car does start and run (fully
charged battery). Am I pretty much safe driving it 2 miles to the garage?

Answer
Hi Michael,
There is no way I can tell you how far you can drive the car as is. I can say that a car with an alternator not working can drive 2 miles in daylight (no lights, no wipers) without much trouble.
You need to correct the wires going to the alternator before you install the new alt.
