MG Car Repair: mg midget speed vibration., speed vibration, suspension bushes

Question
Hi Howard, I own a 1979 MG Midget. My problem is when the car reaches 55-60 mph the whole car vibrates quite violently and seems to wander. I have replaced the front suspension dampers and all the suspension bushes as they were badly worn. There is no play in the kingpins. I have new tyres fitted and balanced and have driven the car with different tyre pressure. It seemed a little better with the recommended pressures. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Answer
Hi Richard,
If the front end has been gone over by a mechanic then you should put the car on a lift and run it up to 55-60 and have someone look at the rear end and driveshaft for the vibration. If there is no vibration then it is still in the front end.

There is no caster or camber setting on the front but the toe in must be set on the front end.
On the rear end look at the spring mounting front and rear and check the "U" joints for signs of rust or loose play.
