MG Car Repair: Midget Tach, turn signal switch, fuse box

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I really have two questions. I'm not a gear head, but think these two things I may be able to resolve without taking the car to a shop.
1) My turn signals quit working. They worked fine until recently. Where do I start?
2) The tachometer never worked since I picked the car up. Is there a troubleshooting process to follow before I pull the tach and replace it? Is it difficult to replace?
Thanks,
Don

ANSWER: Hi Don,
The first tool you need to do any work on the electrical system is a wiring diagram and a test light.

Check for power to the turn signal switch and the turnsignal flasher. Then if power is there, turn the turn signal switch and check for power at the out put wire in each direction.

If you would tell me what year Midget it is, I might be able to tell you a little more about the turnsignals and tach.

QUESTION: Sorry. Forgot to include the year. It's a 77. I do have a test light but not a wiring diagram.

Answer
Don, go to my web site and download the diagram and the index at,

You can see that item # 19 is the flasher unit which is powered by a Green wire in and a light green wire out to the turn signal switch. There the switch connects the light green power wire to the green w/red tracer or the green w/white tracer depending on which way you move the turn signal switch.

The tach is powered as you can see in the diagram by a green wire from the fuse box and triggered by a white w/black tracer from the negative side of the coil.
