MG Car Repair: MGB Clutch not working, clutch master cylinder, dot 4 brake fluid

Question
Hi Howard.
3 weeks ago Istartede my '65 mgb after 5 month in the garage (it's always
keept in the garage during winter) Everything seemed fine exept that I
noticed that I had to press the the clutch pedal all the way to shift gear. And
when leaving it in neutral an letting go of the pedal, I would hear a low noise.
After driving a few times covering apox. 100 miles -this saturday I was
driving and suddenly heard an unpleasent noise and then the cluths didn't
work at all and the car is now unable to drive allthough the engine is runnig
fine!
Now I am fare from an expert but my guess is that either the clutch or the
slave cylinder is to blame. Can you from my description give me your guess
and can you tell me if I have to pull the engine to change the slave cylinder?

Best regards

Michael

Answer
Hi Michael,
The clutch release system has a clutch master cylinder and a slave cylinder. First check the clutch master cylinder reservoir for fluid and if it is low add DOT 4 brake fluid and pump the clutch with long slow strokes. If it was low look at the rubber boot on the master cylinder (under the metal cover over the pedal assemblies under the hood) and look at the rubber boot on the slave cylinder under the car on the bell housing for signs of leakage. (you can replace the slave cylinder from under the car without removing anything else.)

You only have to remove the engine to replace the clutch disk, pressure plate and release bearing.
