MG Car Repair: electronic distributor installation, stock distributor, electronic distributor

Question
I am replaceing stock distributor with one containing an electonic ignition on a 1979 mg midget. the two wires exiting the new distributor are to be installed to the negative post on coil and the other to the ignition switch. it also  says positive terminal should be grounded. should the existing wires  to the coil just be disconnected?

Answer
Hi Mitch,
I don't know anything about what ever kind of ignition system you have purchased, however, most aftermarket ignition systems that I have looked at, when they have only two wires they connect the two wires to each side of the coil and the only wire that should be discarded is the old wire that went from the coil to the distributor. You need to leave the power wire on the coil from the ignition switch. If that is not what they say to do, you need to contact the company you purchased the system from.
