MG Car Repair: Gas Guage Not Working, tank guage, sensor side

Question
1978 MG Midget. I verified the gas guage works by grounding the sensor side: moves to full. However, even with a full tank, guage always says empty. The sensor reads 15 ohms to ground and never changes. I suspect the float has ruptured, filled with gas, and sank to the bottom forever, thereby requiring a sensor replacement. What do you think?

Answer
Hi Bradley,
That is possible but the problem is most likely a rusted sending unit. It is a common fault on these cars. I have found that I was able to save about 50% of them by removing them and spray the arm and unit with WD-40 and slowly work the arm back and forth to free it up.
