MG Car Repair: Fuel Gague, fuel gauge, good shape

Question
Hello Howard,
I recently purchased a 1964 MGB that's in good shape except for some minor flaws. My question is that my fuel gauge isn't working properly. The gauge doesn't even more it just stays on empty. This is my first MG and I'm learning on go, any information would be great. Thank You

Answer
Hi Chad,
The gauge sending unit is in the right side of the fuel tank and has two wires. Leave the black wire connected to it's spade connector and remove the other wire. Turn on the ignition and have someone watch the gauge. Touch the wire to ground and remove it. The needle should deflect one direction when you ground it and it should go the other way when you remove the wire from ground. If it does that, the gauge and the wiring is ok, the problem is the sending unit in the side of the tank. If it does not do that you need to look at the voltage stabilizer mounted on the back of the speedo or tach. for power and test the stabilizer for power and a 8 to 10v output.
