MG Car Repair: mgb front shockers, roadster factory, moss motors

Question
hi Howard.got my B on the road for the first time and found both front shockers leaking oil around shafts very badly.i had recently topped ip with 20grade,now i know why they took so much oil!Ime good with tools,is it practical to replace seals, which i assume are shot. The books recomend a factory changeover. My alternative is to fit telescopics.Any ideas on fabricating mountings and shocker specs?  Thanks for all your help so far....Lawson

Answer
Hi Lawson,
When the seals are leaking it is a sign that the bushings are worn so most of the time you would need to attend to the bushings and the seals. I'm not sure the seals are available but a machine shop could bore out the case for a bushing and a standard available seal. It is a lot of work and could be as expensive as the available kit that converts to a tube type shock. Somewhere I seen a conversion kit that used a coil-over shock thus eliminating the spring too. Check with Moss Motors, Victoria British, The Roadster Factory and Engel Imports about the conversion kits. One or several of them should have it.
