MG Car Repair: 74 midgit clutch, clutch fluid, slave cylinder

Question
I bought a midgit that had been sitting for a while I lost the clutch to where I could not shift in and out of gear without great difficulty or finally at all.  The master cylinder was very low when i finally had it towed home. i refilled the master cylinder and it seems that the clutch fluid (DOT3 brake fluid) seems to be leaking out the slave cylinder and back up the fixed line to where it passes through the frame and then leaking onto the street. Is this possible or am I missing something?  My plan is to replace both the master and the slave cylinder is this advisable?

Answer
Hi Ryan,
If the slave was leaking fluid you needed to either rebuild or replace it, but by adding DOT 3 fluid you probably finished it off. Even though some of the seals now available for British cars can tolerate DOT 3 there is a lot of stock that can NOT. So you MUST use DOT 4 fluid when you replace the master and slave cylinder now.
