MG Car Repair: 1970 mgb, tracer wire, tach

Question
I have a 1970 mgb that was running great until I tried to push the wires on the
back of the tach so that it would work. I had been doing this for a while or
tapping the glass to get it to work. Now the whit ignition wire has gone crazy
and the car will not start.  Sometimes if I push the wire in hard the car will go
until I let go of the wire? What do I need to do. Should I buy a new tach or can I
fix the  problem????

Answer
The white w/ black tracer wire does not make contact with the tach. It only makes a loop and goes on to the coil. If the ignition cuts off then you have a loose connector or a short. Look with a light and see if you have the type that uses a male and a female round plug connector that connects to the tach or if you have the older type that just loops a small "U" shaped plate on the back of the tach. If you have the later type that has two short wires coming out of the tach and one has a male and the other has a female round plug connector. Just unplug the two connectors and plug them back together to see if it is the connectors causing the problem. If that is not the problem then you have a problem in the tach and you need to remove the tach and take it apart to see if you can fix it or just replace it.
