QuestionI don't think it is the glow plugs as it continues to run poorly for up to 20 minutes after its started.
What does the "return line fitting" look like? I want to try that.

Hi Van, Thanks so much for your time.
So I have a 1986 Chevy 1 ton 6.2L diesel. I am still having trouble starting it and it smokes a lot after I get it started(after about four tries). It then runs rough for about ten miles or so then runs and starts fine after its warm. I think you are right thst it is something with the fuel injector pump, and I tried disconnecting the wires, one by one, but that didn't help. Do you think the fuel injector pump is bad and needs to be replaced, or is there anything else it could be?

I had almost all of my injector pumps rebuilt, but not to say yours needs it.
I would first remove the return line fitting from the top front of the injector pump, and make sure the little BB in it moves ok.
I assume you have checked each glow plug individually?
The smoke would indicate it is getting fuel, but it just isn't igniting.

AnswerThe return line comes up off the front of the injector pump. The fitting right there on the cover that the line coming right at you connects to is the one with the check valve in it.

But I still believe it might be the glow plugs. They are even supposed to continue to come on till the engine is running pretty smoothly.
