Military Vehicle Repair: M1009 Hard Start/Goofy Noise, m1009 blazer, glow plugs

Question
Hi I have a 1986 M1009 Blazer that is starting to start hard in the morning. Gotta crank it alot. No problem later in day . Anyway I have looked at the other help you have given others and figure it is a glow plug circuit isssue but see there are a few components to check. Here is the thing when I turn on the key waiting for glow plugs sometimes I hear this "moaning" sound coming from under the dash for a second before glow plug light goes out. Doesn't do it all the time but seems to want to start more when it does make the noise. Does this sound like glow plugs or fuel delivery?
I appreciate your help and answers here on this site.

Answer
Hi Greg,
A noise before you start cranking the engine isn't fuel related. That engine has a mechanical fuel pump, down on the right side of the engine.
The moaning sound could possibly be glow plug related, but I don't recall ever hearing it.

But you said under the dash, and the glow plug controller is under the dash, up near the parking brake pedal.
A moan is sure possible.

If you have a clamp on amp probe, you can see if the glow plugs are drawing enough power.
But a few, or all of the glowplugs burnt out will sure act like you describe.

I have had them, though, that have a air leak in the fuel filter base, and that allows the fuel to drain back to the tank. That causes some long crank periods for the first time of the day, especially after a two or three day weekend.
