Military Vehicle Repair: cucv alternator, jumper socket, side firewall

Question
Van,got the starter fixed on my cucv. went to start it the next morning to find the front battery was dead. I just had the passenger side alternator rebuilt 2 months ago. When the starter locked up and had the battery wires smoking could have I harmed the alternator? Could I have destroyed the batteries? Could there be a draw on that battery from another source?(No I didnt leave the headlights or anything on)I have just not had any good luck lately with this thing. What else is running off that front battery? I also was told to discoonect the jumper socket in the grille just incase that was shorted out,Ive never had any problems with it though. I diconnected the power wire from on the passenger side firewall. Does that do anything else there? Im ready to pull my hair out with this thing. Ive owned it 12 years and all of the sudden it seems to be cursed, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Nate,
The front battery operates almost everything on the truck. The rear one is only used for the starter.
I have never seen that slave cable connector cause a problem, unless it was shorted to the frame, in which case, it was arcing. It wouldn't cause the front battery to go dead. it would draw both batteries dead.

Do you happen to still have the blackout lights connected?
I would look at the truck in the dark, and see if anything is illuminated You can barely see those blackout lights, and they sometimes even get painted over.

I cut the wires from all of the blackout lights.

The regulator is inside the alternator, and could possibly be bad.
You could swap alternators, and see if the front battery maintains a charge after that.

I don't know what power wire from the passengers side firewall you mean. Most of that large stuff there is 24 volt + & -.
