Military Vehicle Repair: Relay, ford starter solenoid, o reillys auto parts

Question
Van this is just a follow up to the previous question. Do I need to put something inline of the wire I am running from the toggle switch for my glow plugs to the alternator? I have a hot wire directly from the alternator to the dash hooked up to the toggle switch. I completley bypassed the relay that was on the firewall that also runs the wait light. Is this ok? Thank you

Answer
Hello Nate,
First off, I might not run the wire from the alternator. I would use that power tap on the firewall, right beside the glow plug relay. That is 12 volts.
One of the alternators will be 24 volts at the battery stud, and that will ruin all eight glowplugs very quickly, if not instantly.

Really, I would use the toggle switch, or momentary push button to operate a relay. The toggle switch isn't heavy enough to operate eight glowplugs for very long.

If your relay on the firewall is a little black plastic thing, it is junk, and melted inside.
There is a relay at "O"Reillys auto parts, that looks like a Ford starter solenoid, but has isolated control studs.
I just don't have the number right here. I have one of them on my desk at work. 580-429-3007 after 0800 central time. Don't say what you want....just ask for Van.
