Military Vehicle Repair: Charging system on CUCV, cucv, rubber block

Question
Ron,
My CUCV has been in the shop for over a month now because one battery wouldnt keep a charge. The mechanics said that they checked the wiring because the alternators were fine. I gave them the wiring diagrams for both the generator and alternator 24V system. They still are having a hard time please help.

Answer
Hello, Thanks for the question. The first place I would start, that is the most common problem with the CUCV charging system is a series of fuseable links. As you are standind in front of the truck, looking at the engine compartment, to the right of the back corner of the right Valve Cover, there are some wiring that runs downward. There should be a least 2 or three fuseable links, they usually are a orange wire with black round rubber block made in to them, unless they have been replaced.I have had to replace several of these on the cucv for charging problems. The shop should know how to check them, but you grab the wired fuseble link and pull it and squeeze it. If when you pull it is is like elastic,or when you squeeze it ,it crunches then they are burnt up.I will look at a TM manual on the cucv for trouble shooting and see if I can locate anyhting else for you.
