Mitsubishi Repair: mitsubishi eclipse stalled while driving, internal engine components, mitsubishi eclipse

Question
93 eclipse 2.0 turbo Just had a alternator put on the car while driving i was down shifting from third into 2nd and the car shut off and would not start back even tried to pop the clutch and it would not start or turn over and there is power so what could be causing this Ive got it was the starter but my dad was a master mechanic and I have never heard or known of the car stalling while driving from the starter going out.Someone told me it also could be the timing belt but it does not turn over at all Ive had a timing belt break on me and the car turned over it just didn't start. I'm hoping its not the worst thing a locked engine could you please give me your insight on what might be happening?

Answer
Nikea,
A bad starter will not cause your engine to stall out, but a bad battery and/or alternator will.  Those items should be tested, as the need for a new alternator could have been caused by a bad battery.  And driving a car with a new alternator and bad battery can cause the new alternator to go bad very quickly.  Getting the starter checked and replaced if needed can also save the life of your battery.  As an FYI, I just replaced the starter on my 90 Eclipse last year.  It was the original!  20+ years for a starter is pretty darn good, but they don't last forever.

A broken or slipped timing belt will surely cause your engine to stall.  And if the timing belt did break, it can cause several damage to internal engine components and may lead to a seize up.  Have your mechanic check the engine for timing issues.  You can remove the timing belt cover and see if the belt is intact.  You can remove the driver side front wheel, and try to rotate the engine by hand with a breaker bar and 1/2" extension.  If you do try this yourself, be careful to only try to rotate the crank in a clockwise manner.
Good luck!
