Mitsubishi Repair: 2001 mitsubishi galant jerks, mitsubishi galant, head gasket

Question
I recently replace my starter and a few days later my car overheated. I needed alot of fluids and I replaced the thermostat. The next day my car started to putt and/or jerk. It gets worst everyday especially when at a light or driving slow. Not so much when driving in high speeds. I had alot of work done to the car . Please help. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Wanda,
It may just be a coincidence that your car started to overheat once the starter was replaced, or perhaps a neighboring component was disturbed during the replacement.  The starter attaches to the transmission housing and usually is replaced from the engine bay; not from under the car.  Several hoses and wires typically are required to be moved or disconnected to perform a starter replacement and there may have been one that was damaged in the process.

If the engine overheated to the point where the your temperature gauge was in the red zone for a fair amount of time and/or you noticed steam coming from your engine, that could be an indication that your head gasket has warped.  This will cause loss of compression and can cause the symptoms you're now seeing.  Have a mechanic perform a compression test on your engine.
Good luck!
