Mitsubishi Repair: 92 3000gt SL starting issue, mitsubishi 3000gt, starter motor

Question
I am having issues starting my car.A 1992 Mitsubishi 3000gt. SL model. Manual transmission. When you open the door all the interior lights come on but when you put the key in and turn it to actually start the car everything goes dark. If you let it sit for a few minutes the lights will come back on but the same result with turning the key and actually starting it. I had the battery tested. The battery is good just needed recharged. So I had it re charged and still have the same result with starting the vehicle.  Is this the starter or the ignition or electrical or what? I'm lost.

Answer
Rachel,
I had a similar experience recently myself.  If your battery is in good shape, then this very well could be your starter.  If you are still using the original starter motor (20 years old now), then it's probably due to be replaced.  When you turn your key to start your car, all power from the battery is used to engage the starter motor.  If the starter does not turn, then it rapidly discharges the battery and can cause it to fail completely.  I would also recommend having your alternator inspected as well to be sure it's charging your battery appropriately.
Good luck!
