Mitsubishi Repair: Very strong smell from magna during rain, frequent braking and uphill downhill journey, brake test, hot weather

Question
Dear Anthony
I have recently bought a 98 magna altera 3.0lt auto v6 210k km. Whenever I drive it especially during rain it smells a lot always from front of car and bonnet feels hot even in rain. Smell doesnt come when windows are closed means smell is not from inside the car. Also longer I drive more strong is the smell. I went through your answers to other questions and decided to try to find out the cause. Ok here is what I did.
Today it was raining heavily when I had to go 30kms. I closed all windows to sense any inside smell then switched on the fan for 30km. I made sure to drive at constant speeds most of the time and not to apply brakes suddenly or at all most of this time to rule out moulds. After coming to stop I went out and checked for any smell. To my surprise there wasn't any. Then I bent over close to every tyre and found strong smell near left front tyre.
Also on previous occassions when it smells a lot are mostly the times of rain, when I drive uphill and downhill or hot weather.
It shudders when goes uphill but shudder goes away on either increasing or decreasing the speed(but keep on shuddering if I don't change the speed). Shudder is also there if i suddenly accelerate at traffic lights during rain.
I bought the car with a road worthy cert. It shows a brake test was done which was something 68% competent. Two front brake pads were replaced according to it. All fluids are full. No leakage. Temperature needle never goes beyond half mark. Pick up is very good. Other than smell it has given no problem. Can't afford to go to a mechanic right now, very tight on budget.
Please help. Please ask me if you need any other info.
Thank you very much

yours sincerely
Jim.

Answer
Jim,
There are a number of items can give off a strong order when they get hot.  I'm not sure what the rain has to do with it, but sometimes moisture can enhance a smells potency.  Since you noticed the smell the most intense near the tire, check there for any possible areas where you may notice friction, fluid or grease leaks.  You may even have a failing wheel bearing, which could explain the shudder and smell.  Else, other suspension components like the struts, tie rods, ball joints, etc. may could also cause shuddering or bad smells if bushings are worn excessively.  Many mechanics can give free estimates just to inspect the car.  You can call around and ask.  If this is a suspension problem, the longer you delay in getting it fixed, the more expensive it will be to fix.
Good luck!
