Mitsubishi Repair: Timing Belts, balance shaft, hydraulic tensioner

Question
just replaced my timing belt on a 92 eclipse, 1500 miles later it broke while driving, mechanic said my oil pump seal was leaking, shouldn't there have been a tale tale sign at replacemnt? shouldn't warranty be responsible for all repairs even if i need a new engine?

Answer
Larry,
If you had your belts replaced at a Mitsubishi dealership, most will warranty the parts and labor for up to a year.  Though on a nearly 20 year old car, there are components that begin to go bad after surrounding components are replaced.  A new timing belt that breaks usually indicates it was improperly installed.  Namely, the hydraulic tensioner or balance shaft belt were improperly adjusted when the new belt was installed.  An overly tightened timing belt can cause excessive stress on pulleys and sprockets (like the oil pump gear), which can result in leaks.  Hopefully your mechanic will back his work and take care of your problem for you at no additional cost.
Good luck!
