Mitsubishi Repair: 2001 Eclipse, blown head gasket, coolant level

Question
Ok this is for my friend. He was driving his car and he said that it made a loud noise like bang and then it died so he had it towed home. He just told me that it will start and drive but it overheats very quickly. I told him not to drive it. What could be wrong... Head Gasket?.. Thanks Anthony.

Answer
Anthony,
For the overheating in this scenario is typically caused by a blown head gasket.  Have our friend check the coolant level.  Even if it appears to have coolant in the system, a leak at the head gasket can prevent flow of coolant to pass around the engine to keep it at a normal operation temperature.  Have a compression test done on the engine, and that may reveal the ultimate problem.
Good luck!
