Mitsubishi Repair: Eagle Talon shift problems, eagle talon, wont move

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1991 automatic eagle talon and when I have been driving lately when I go to accelerate the car seems to not be shifting and the RPM's will rev up and the car wont move as if i was in neutral. Do you know any reason why it might be doing this, and if so what needs to be fixed?

ANSWER: Owen: You need to change the fluid, filter and add a bottle of transmission conditioner to the transmission when you change that fluid as well as the filter. Have you checked the fluid to see the color of it? Pink in color, great but still should be changed. Pink and brown not so good but still the change would do wonders. All brown not good at all, does it smell burnt? It is just brown with no burnt smell change the fluid, filter and check the pan to see how much steel is in that pan. With a burnt smell well you have started to burn the clutches inside the transmission not a good thing. But sometimes that will still be fixed with a transmission flush, new filter, fluid and that conditioner goes a long ways. So try that and see what happens. You could have the car coded to see what the computer might kick as to what is going on with the transmission too. As the computer controls the shifting and other things in that transmission too. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda

QUESTION: Is the fluid the only thing that would cause something like this, and for the fluid is it something I can have someone do for me like a mechanic?

Answer
Owen: Look I always tell people to do the easy things first then go to the harder things. The fluid(is an oil like fluid, pink in color) it helps all those clutches move in the transmission. If that fluid is old, or the filter has never been changed or is very old, is not cleaning the fluid as well as it should thing start to not moving in the transmission as it should. I had a car come into the shop, and it would hardly shift. We honestly thought that the transmission was going or gone because the car was an older model. But once getting into the fact this lady had never checked the transmission fluid level, did not know you could do that and so when I checked the level there was no level. So I poured in a some fluid, the transmission moved some. So then we changed the fluid and the filter. The filter came off the car, in a gummy mess and that fluid was almost black in color. I really wondered if the car's transmission was not shot. But I replaced the filter, added new fluid and put in that bottle of transmission conditioner. Started the car, got it warmed up and the transmssion shifted good. But I did tell the lady to think about trading the car off, last I know she is still driving it. Other times we have done this and it turned out to be something else. But you just never know with these things. So it might be best if you took your car to a transmission shop and let them check things out. The fluid, filter and conditioner; if you got a garage, got ramps that you can run the car up on, tools and a repair manual for your car. You can do this yourself, other wise a shop can do it too. Oh the repair manual you can buy at any parts store for around $20.00 and well worth the money. So what can I tell you here, it is up to you. It could be something very costly too, but the fluid, filter and that conditioner might cost you around $35.00 to $40.00 up to what the cost of the fluid might be if you do it yourself. Of course add the cost of that repair manual but still call around in your area and see what the shops will cost you to do the job. I really don't know your area. If you had the computer coded in your car, it might kick out what the problem is in the transmission too. But then if you have been beating the transmission to death, then it could be one of those clutches are shot and you will need to rebuild or replace the transmission. But why not start with something not so costly? Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
