Mitsubishi Repair: Oil burning, valve cover gasket, valve seals

Question
I have a 1990 eagle talon auto, whenever I come to a stop then go again
my exhaust let's out a smoke cloud from oil and if I sit to long the oil
pressure drops. I just had it in the shop to change the oil and made sure it
was 10w30 and after having it in the shop I still have this problem. My
exhaust manifold is cracked but this can't be the problem of the oil
pressure dropping and the smoke comin out the exhaust. I have a new
one coming soon so could that change anything? I'm not sure what to try
next to fix this problem

Answer
Codey,
The problem you described is usually caused by leaky valve seals and/or leak valve guides.  The worst case would be if you have worn piston rings and oil is getting into your combustion chamber that way.  There's also a 'best-case' scenario which would be if you simply have a worn valve cover gasket; which is relatively easy and inexpensive to fix.  For a car that's nearly 20 years old, it's not uncommon.  Replacing your exhaust manifold won't fix this problem.  You'd want a mechanic to check the items I've mentioned above to see where the problem may be.  But normally on a car that age, if you're going through 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles, it's nothing to be too concerned about.  Just be sure your oil level is always within normal range.  If you exceed 1 qt oil/1000 miles, you should have this problem fixed.
Good luck!
