Mitsubishi Repair: 1998 Eclipse, mitsubishi eclipse, eagle talon

Question
I'm looking to buy a new car.I found a 1998 Eclipse for a little less than two grand. The car is listed as "The engine just went out, everything else is fine. Want to get rid of car. Will work on an offer." I was thinking I have about three months before I can drive and it'd be a good project to work on with my dad. What price range am I looking at to fix up an engine??
I really need some help.

Thank you!!!

Answer
Sabrina,
For a car that's over 10 years old with a bad engine, you shouldn't have to pay than $500 for that car.  I would not even attempt to fix the existing engine.  You should be able to find a rebuilt engine for around $800-$1200.  You may also want to replace the transmission as well.  That may be another $500-$800 for a used one.

A 2nd generation Eclipse ('95-'99) can be a good project car, especially since it was a popular car and you can find lots of parts for it.  The Mitsubishi Eclipse is the same as a Eagle Talon, so you'll be able to find parts without much effort.
Good luck!
