Mitsubishi Repair: turbo, eclipse gst, turbine shaft

Question
i have a 95 eclipse gst. When i would give the car gas its fine but when i give it more gas and the turbo would come on i would here a rattling noise. so i took off the parts so i could see if something was inside the blades nothing was so i put it back together and now my turbo isnt working and i still hear the rattling when the turbo should kick on. what is wrong?

Answer
Dan,
This may be caused by the turbine wheel in the turbo wobbling.  There should be no free play in the turbine shaft and it should spin freely.  You can try a simple by test by letting the engine cool completely, then remove the large intake hose that goes from your air filter housing to the turbo.  You should be able to reach down and feel the turbine.  You should be able to spin it freely with your fingers, but if you're able to rock it back and forth at all, then you have a problem with the shaft or bearings and you'll want to have the turbo replaced.
Good luck!
