Mitsubishi Repair: bad ticking and a lot of exhaust, o2 sensor, excess fuel

a 2004 gallant yesterday turned the key aloud clicking car starts fine. today the clicking is less I just turn the key
and hear the ticking If I start the engine their is a lot of exhaust. louder ticking onexceleration service engine light is on also

There may be multiple problems here.  If you are near an AutoZone parts store, they can read your car's computer for free. They can tell your why the check engine light is on.  This can help point your mechanic to the proper area to check.  A lot of smoke in the exhaust is usually an indication of excess fuel being sent to the engine but not being burned off properly.  This can be caused by a bad O2 sensor and/or damaged catalytic converter.  This can also happen if your air intake is has a blockage.  Your mechanic should be able to fix the problem.
