Mitsubishi Repair: Mitsubishi eclipse shifting problem, mitsubishi eclipse, manual tranny

Question
I havejust bought a 1997 eclipse gst 5 speed and well what the problem is that when im in 2nd gear trying to get out of it is hard as a rock and you have to hit it with the palm of your hand for it to shift but the rest of the gears are fine ...do you have any clue what might be the problem?

Answer
Marc,
This could be something as simple as replacing your transmission fluid, adjusting your shift cables, or something more involved like replacing the synchronizers in your gearbox. Replacing the fluid your can be done, but make sure you get the proper fluid.  You'll want to use a manual tranny fluid rated as GL-4.  This is not easy to find at your local auto parts store, you'll probably need to either order it or get it from your local Mitsubishi dealership.  Adjusting your shifter cables is also something you could do yourself, but you should pick up a repair manual before doing this job yourself.  You can find a repair manual at your local auto parts store.  Replacing your synchros basically requires a tranny rebuild.  For this, you'll want a transmission shop or the dealership to do for you.
Good luck!
