Mitsubishi Repair: 2003 Eclipse GTS, first and last time, service engine soon light

Last night was the first and last time I hit the rev limiter on my '03 GTS.  I soon saw that the "service engine soon" light came on and stayed on.  The car drives the exact same way it did before the light came on.  It only has around 24k miles on it and drives like it does.  What could have caused the light to come on?  Should I be worried?

D: The car's computer is picking up a problem in the car's system and so kicks on that light. My guess would be a sensor, I would not just let it go because with time that problem might causes more problems in your car. If you have an AutoZone close by they will code your car for free and then you would know for sure what the problem is.  Other wise take it to a shop or dealership for the computer to be coded. An 03 I would not just let it go, it is better to know and not be worried. Right? God bless: Linda
