Mitsubishi Repair: Mitsubishi 2000 Pajero engine tapping noise, valve lifters, mechanical level

Question
Hi,

I own a 2000 Mitsubishi Pajero Exceed 7 seat model Japanese import model GH-V75W LRHOO engine G674. I am experiencing a tapping noise from the top of the engine ... under light accerlation and increased pressure on the throttle when im idle the tapping noise gets louder ... seems like a tapping noise when the cam cylinders go up and down ... just wondering if you had any ideas or could refer me to a forum where I may be able to diagnose what the problem may be .. im inexpereinced on a mechanical level. car has around 120,000 kms on the clock. Appreciate any help ... thanks very much. Steve

Answer
Steve,
This sounds like you may have sticky valve lifters (sometimes referred to by Mitsubishi as hydraulic lash adjusters).  These lifters have some passages for oil to travel through that lubricate them.  Over time, the passageways can get clogged, causing a clacking noise.  The lifters can be removed and cleaned out.  For the most part, there is no cause for alarm and no damage is being done.  But you can have a mechanic inspect for other causes for the noise and have the lifters cleaned if the noise is really bothering you.
Good luck!
