Mitsubishi Repair: 1998 Mits Ecip Inspection, straight answer, autozone

Question
I have been trying to get my car inspected for months now and can seem to get a straight answer regarding why and how I can get it to pass NC Inspection.  I am hearing that I have "failing" codes - most of the time the mechanic resets the codes and ask me to drive Xmiles and they should reset themselves but they are not.  I understand this is a know issue.  Do you have any idea what I'm talking about??  Any help/suggestions would be much appreicated.

Answer
Barbara,
Most likely what is happening is that your check engine light is coming on.  This is probably due to a failing emissions component.  When the fault codes are reset, your car's computer will remember the fault code until a certain number of miles are driven.  This is how your car's computer confirms that the problem has been fixed or not.  If the emission component is still failing, it will continue to throw the fault code.

Your mechanic should be able to retrieve the codes and tell you exactly what the problem is.  You can even take your car to the dealership to read the codes and tell you what the problem is.  If you have an AutoZone store in your area, they can also read your fault codes for free.

But your car will never pass inspection unless the problem is resolved.  So get your car fixed before trying to get it inspected again.
Good luck!
