Mitsubishi Repair: Head replacement, head assembly, junk yards

Question
Timing belt on mu 2000 Galant broke. Repair shop says pistons damaged the valves and the valves or head assembly needs replaced. Could this be true and if so would a junkyard head save me some money. They want over $2000 for the repair and the car is not worth $2000 now.

Answer
Alex: Sorry but when the timing belt goes it takes everything. Why not just pull the engine out of your car and put in a different engine. You can often than not get a good rebuilt engine from a junk yard, with not to many miles on it. Still I don't know what something like that would cost you, in your area. But it sounds like to me they want to rebuild your car's engine. What is going to kill you on that, would be the labor. In most cases the parts are not to bad, but they really take you apart with their labor costs. Why not check at the junk yards and see what another engine would cost you. Don't let the shop tell you this but rather check for yourself. Sometimes some shops are not very honest and I am not saying your's is that way. But some are.So do a little looking into this yourself so you know what is going on. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
