Mitsubishi Repair: fly wheel, mitsubishi eclipse gs, flywheel teeth

Question
Hi Linda thank you for taking the time to help me...I recently replaced the starter on my 92 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS and when i start my car it makes a horrible noise...similar to the noise it made when the old starter needed replaced, i was told that i may need to replace my fly wheel and idea how much this might cost me? I have already put about 2000 dollars into this vehicle so almost everything on it is new...and i was wondering what kind of damage would be done if i drove my car with a bad flywheel, thank you so much.

Answer
Listen Amber: You need to get someone to take that new starter off and check the teelth on the fly wheel. It would be the teeth are bad and so the starter is not catching them so the noise. But sometimes it is the way the starter was put in, or the wrong starter or even a broken bolt so the starter is not working right. But you need to find someone you can trust, a father, brother, boyfriend or friend; get them to jack the car up, put jack stands under it, pull the starter off and look at those teeth. Most shops do not treat women very good and so not always honest with you. Yes, you can drive the car, but if the problem is with the flywheel and the teeth are bad. With time the starter will not catch the teeth, so not turn the engine and that is what starts it. So the car will not start. So don't put this off, get someone to check those teeth on the flywheel, as you can see the teeth once you remove the starter but you got to be under the car to do this.It would be a costly job, as the flywheel is at the bottom of the engine, so the engine would have to be taken out of the car to be fixed. I can only guess as to the cost as every area is different but I would say over a $1000.00. Still get those teeth looked at, because it might be the starter is just not fitting into the flywheel as it should. You  can run it like that, just don't do it to long if the flywheel teeth are bad, soon the starter will not be able to start the car. Who was the last place to replace the starter before this new one. I would be going back and getting on them, as to why did you not tell you the flywheel was bad?? Well hope this helps some and God bless: Linda
