Mitsubishi Repair: chronic alternator belt squeal, eagle summit, alternator belt

Question
I have a 1995 Eagle Summit AWD with a 2.4L engine (no ac). For 6 months or more I have had problems with a chronic alternator squeal. It started about 2 months after I had the water pump replaced. I have replaced the alternator belt 3 times and the power steering belt at least once in the last 6-8 months. Recently I replaced the alternator (2 weeks ago)because it was not charging the battery and the belt was chewed up. I figured this would finally solve my problems. 2 weeks later it is starting to squeal again. When the belt is re-tightened it will not squeal for about 2 weeks. I first start noticing the belt squealing when I start the car after a week from the time I adjusted the belt, (I get a small screech) then it worsens a few days later more so when I turn on the heater fan,(creating more load on the alternator). The squeal gets worst until I re-adjust the belt. I have had 4 different mechanics work on this problem. Most of the time they just re-adjust the belt. Please help.

Answer
Joseph: Either the alternator brace is not staying tight and should be replace as it is letting the alternator move and so the noise. Or else one of the pulley has a bad bearing in it.You should replace those pulleys and I think that would fix your problem. Or maybe you should also check to make sure then they put in the new water pump they tightened everything down as they should have. Could be something was not put in right and so it works loose after a time. You said you had to replace the alternator and the belt again. So something has to be causing things to happen to the alternator and its belt. You could do a battery test on the system. To make sure everything is working together as it should. As your system should be kicking out the right amount of volts. A voltmeter would show if things were. But still either something is not tightened up as it should have when the water pump was put in or else one or both pulleys are bad. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
