Mitsubishi Repair: low-pitch grinding nosie from the underneath after the timing belt changed, mechnic, low pitch

Question
QUESTION: Hi Linda,

Sorry to disturb you again. I got my timing belt and water pump changed. But now I can hear a low-pitch grinding nosie from somewhere closed to A/C and Power-steering belt. I have nerve heard this noise before changing timing belt and water pump.

At first the mechnic said the noise is from the A/C belt which is too old. But after he changed this beltt, the noise is still there. Then he said the nosie is normal as the car is old. But I have nerve heard this nosie before he has changed the timing belt and water-pump for me.

1, I suspect the mechinc didnot fix the bearing of water pump properly. What is your idea?

2, And could you please tell me where the water pump locats in my car--- 96 Mistibishi Magana, 2.4L.

Thanks

ANSWER: William: Could be the pulley that the mechnic put back on is bad or the bearing is bad. Oh listen old car or new if they did not make a noise before the work was done, then it is something the mechnic did. Not the car. Sounds like to me that your mechnic is old not the car. Again it could be the pulley that the belt runs on that turns the water pump. You will have to take the car to another shop and let them check things over. If you find out that the other mechnic did not do the job right, I would go back and raise some hell with him. I always hate it when the guy working on the car, will say something like well it is an old car. Excuse me?! Find the belts, and the water pump would be on the bottom of the belts, you would have the power steering and ac belt, then the other belt. Still I wonder if the pulley is not bad but was put back on anyway. You will need to have another shop check this out for you. Stand your ground, you know something is not right! Hope this helps and God bless.. sorry this is late in being answered I had the flu. Linda

QUESTION: Thanks Linda.

Yesterday I took off the A/C and Powersteering belt and another belt which I believe if for alternator and water pump.  I started the enignee for about one mintues. So i can clearly listen to the nosie. the nosie is definelty from the enginee/timing belt/vale area. And the nosie:

1, When idle(at 750rpm), the motor sounds good.
2, when start up(RPM up to about 1200rpm) or accelarating
(RPM up to more thwn 2000rpm), the motor sounds noisy. I think it is squeaking noise. especailly while/after the RPM gauge is back from high RPM reading to low RPM reading, the engine is sreamimg/whistling.  In one word, the enginee sounds good at low RPM, But getting worse with the RMP going high ang back from high to Low.

I have spent lots of time on internet and study from simliar cases. Some ideas are:

1, the new blet is too tighten and not stretched yet.
2, the timing need to be adjusted.(I have asked the mechnic and he told me he didnot test/adjust timing as he tink it is no need)

Any idea and suggestions.

Looking forward to your reply.

Thanks

Answer
William: Sorry this is late in coming but I have been sick and then had to move a whole a lot of snow. So not doing well here, getting farther behind too. Ok, you could just run the car for a bit and see if the belt stretches some and the noise goes away. Or you could push your mechnic to time the car and bit but then if it was the belt needing to working its self to your car's engine then the timing will be off again. So why not drive it was bit and see what happens. Let say a two weeks, still I worry just a bit that you man that worked on your car did not get the timing belt on the right marks. Still I guess after two weeks if the noise is still there, I would be pushing for some timing or checking. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
