Mitsubishi Repair: Engine Ticking - RPM related, lucas oil stabilizer, oil additives

Question
Hi Anthony, i own a 2002 Eclipse GS and the problem is that the motor is ticking. It is generally RPM related ticking faster as the RPM goes higher. Also, if i steadily increase the RPMs in neutral it wont to it as much as if i feather the throttle quickly. i have been told it was a sticky lifter and that an oil change with a quart of lucas oil stabilizer will cure this. well, it didn't and im quite worried as i have a long drive in a couple days. i used 4 qts of castrol 10-30 with a qt of the lucas. any ideas/suggestion?

Answer
Sean,
The ticking noise you're hearing most likely are dirty/clogged lifters.  Sometimes oil additives and cleaners may help a little, but rarely completely cure the problem.  Removing the lifters and cleaning them out by hand is the best way.

But the good news is that you shouldn't worry about this.  Sticky lifters that tick is a common occurrence and won't cause any permanent damage, so you should be fine for your long drive.  Though I would recommend next time you change your oil that you try a 5W-30 weight oil.  It's thinner when cold and may pass through the oil passages in the lifters easier and make them quieter.
Good luck!
