Mitsubishi Repair: galant, crankshaft pulley, crank sensor

Question
trying to fix crank sensor and cam sensor code on 2002 galant 2.4 engine. i put both sensors on new and still have same codes after being cleared. timing belt is on correct.    wiring looks ok.  any ideas   john  thanx.

Answer
The proper way to clear this up would be to look at the waveform with an oscilliscope and verify that the pattern looks okay, since the code is being set because the PCM doesn't think so. The service repair manual shows the correct pattern, including the precise location of each sensor in relation to each other. One sensor that is bad can (and will) set both codes as will incorrect belt installation, crankshaft pulley slippage (check the keyway on the crank and the pulley to ensure no wear, the sensor disk on the crankshaft is warped or touching sensor or incorrect components installed. Also verify correct voltage (5 or 8V)to each sensor and that they have a good ground.

The nice thing about a scope is it will answer all these questions in a few minutes by comparing the two waveforms. I would recommend this be checked by a professional and compare it to the service information provided by ALLDATA and the manufacturer, as well as likely other sources as well.
