Mitsubishi Repair: the repair for a crank sensor, crank sensor, ligitimate

Question
My 1999 Galant will not turn over the mechanic told me that it was my crank sensor and siad that it would cost me $60 for a new sensor and $180 for the labor. Once he came out to get started he said that I needed my timing belt replaced and another smaller belt,he is now charging me an additional 100 plus the cost of the two belts which he claims are 50. Does this sound ligitimate?

Answer
When you say will not turn over, you mean it won't start, but DOES crank, correct?

If the crank sensor is bad, it is located at the front of the motor and requires the timing belt to be removed. Replacing the timing belt (and the balancer belt) is a smart thing to do as the labor would be higher if it would be done later.  The one timing belt he has to already remove and the labor guide gives .3 hours to do the other while he was there, so the $100 extra is a bit steep. The two belts at 50 is a reasonable deal.  Basically, I would ask why it takes another $100 to do a 15 minute task. The rest looks good. The waterpump is also under the t-belt and may also be a good time to replace before it goes bad, that would be worth the $100 to have all that done.

Hopes that helps and was timely enough for you, I don't read my questions except M-F!
