I have a 98 Mits. Eclipse RS/ 2.0 DOHC engine,4 cylinder, automatic/ Why is my "check engine" light on?

Hi, the light was turned on by the engine control computer because it sees a cicuit that isn't functioning, a computer response that is at the limit of control or a misfire that is occuring. Since the number of items that the light can come on for is so large, you need to narrow down the possible reasons. That's the easy part. Many parts stores such as schucks or checker will pull the codes for free. With that information, we can help you narrow down the culprits, but many times, it takes additional information that requires a scan tool or other diagnostic tools.  have the codes retrieved and get back to me.  

I should also say you have three things you can do, ignore the light, find out the likely problems or have it fixed. Many times fixing the reason the light illuminated will save you $$$ by not allowing damage to other expensive components such as a rich mixture destroying the catalytic converter.
