Mitsubishi Repair: Service Engine Soon light, coolant level, mitsubishi eclipse

Question
Hi Linda,

I have a mitsubishi eclipse 2001 and today morning suddenly I could see Service engine Soon light on...The car is running fine as usual and I cant see any jerks or missing...
Should I take it to a mechanic or should I decode the message?
I also heard there is an easy option of disconnecting your battery which will reset the light..So no more signal comes and if the issue persists then the light will come again in which case we can take it to the mechanic...is this a good option?
Thanks for your help....

Answer
Andy: Hey why not check a few things first before you decided to clear that code. This is by the way, the way the computer of your car tells you there is a problem in the system. Why not check the oil in the engine, transmssion oil, coolant level, maybe see if a stark plug wire is loose. Those are easy things to check and sometimes that will knock that light off. It is true you could clear the computer but why? If the computer kicked that light on there is a problem. If you let it go, it will get worse and will cost more to fix it. Take the car to a shop. If you decode the message and it talks about a sensor or something would you know how to change it? And no I do not agree that clearing that message is a good idea. Because it might end up being much more time and money costly down the road. In that the car stops along the side of the road someplace. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
