Answer
Mark: You can not change the firing order on the engine, it is programed into the computer and you have the computer all mixed up now. You know this engine is controled and run by a lot of sensors and that computer. Replace the distibutor cap and you have replaced the crank sensor. I would have the car coded to see if the computer might kick out something as to what is going on with the engine. You say you did the stark plugs and wires how about that distributor cap and rotor? You need to get yourself a book on this car, set that firing order back as the car is to be set. Any parts store would have such a book, they cost around $20.00 and are well worth the money. I know what you say about carb kind of engines, I miss those because everything is so controled by that computer in these little cars. You should have that computer tested though, as Mitsubishi farmed out the building of their car's computers to another company and that company did not build very good ones. In that a piece in that computer will start to leak into the computer and with time that does kill off the computer. One of the signs is a rough idle. The car is only as good as its computer and all those sensors. But the computer would not kick on that check enging light, if it is sick its self. The line about the car sounds like a vw engine makes me think the computer is not setting things right. But you could have a weak or bad sensor someplace too. Mean while get a new distributor cap and rotor, get a book, put the firing order back as it should be, unhook the neg cable on the battery, wait 5 minutes and rehook it that should reset the computer, then try it then. If still the engine runs rough then take the car to a shop and have it coded to see what the computer as well as all those sensors would tell you as to what is going on. Just because a shop coded the car, you could still fix it yourself. Oh that gas odor could because the computer is kicking out to much fuel. How is the car fuel mileage? I do hope this helps and God bless: Linda
