Mitsubishi Repair: mitzi rvr drivetrain, rear drive shaft, proper lubrication

Question
Gidday from NZ. I've a 92 mitzi rvr fulltime 4 wheel drive. i am experiencing high fuel usage 6kms /ltr @$1.68 ltr and would like to know if its poss to remove rear driveshaft eg: from mid hanger to diff, enableing the rvr to become a 2 front wheel drive with its economy. Thanks mate.

Answer
Maurie,
I don't the the fuel mileage gain would be worth the time, trouble, and money involved in removing the rear drive shaft.  If you were able to removed or disconnet the rear driveshaft from the rear differential, you be able to go from 6kms/ltr to 7kms/ltr.  I would more so focus on making sure your car it properly tuned.  Make sure all regular schedule maintenance items are checked and replaced.  This includes, but limited to, spark plugs, plug wires, air filter, fuel filter, oil/oil filter, etc.  Proper lubrication is also very important.  Also have your O2 sensor checked and replaced if necessary.  A faulty sensor will definitely kill your fuel economy.
Good luck!
