Steering Column Repair: 2003 Dodge Dakota Steering column rattle, hub area, intermediate shaft

Question
There is a rattle in the steering hub area. As well, there is a slight 'dead spot' in the steering. The rattle will stop if I apply a slight rotational force to the wheel. It feels like a loose collar or something but I can't find an exploded view to chase this down. My other suspicion is that its in the intermediate coupling somewhere.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Hi Bill:

I don't usually do noises over the internet.  They are too hard to diagnose that way, but in your case I believe you are correct.  It is most likely the intermediate shaft that is causing your concern.  That's a popular complaint and repair on that vehicle.
I'm enclosing a blowup of the lower end so you can see what you are talking about replacing.  This is form a Durango, same as your Dakota

Good luck
Doug
